  4.                 SERIES : THE PRIEST AND HIS GARMENTS.  LESSON 1.

  6. PRIEST.

  8. "One officiating", "minister",  "prince",  "to draw near".
  9. A priest is a representative in things pertaining to God.  Man's representative
  10. to God and also God's representative to man.
  11.  
  12. THREE DIFFERENT TERMS FOUND IN SCRIPTURE.
  13.  
  14. 1.    Priest             2. High Priest.              3. Great High Priest
  15.  
  16. 1.    Priests - they were members of Aaronic family.
  17. 2.    High Priest - Aaron was the first, he was succeeded by his son and
  18.                     so on through the generations (only 1 high priest at one
  19.                     time).
  20. 3.    Great High Priest - only one - Jesus.

  22. PROGRESSIVE STAGES IN THE PRIESTHOOD.  (Before the Law).

  24. 1.    Every man a Priest (for himself) .... Abel Gen 4:4, Noah Gen 8:20,
  25.       Abraham Gen 12:7, Isaac Gen 26:25, Jacob Gen 33:20, 35:1, Job 1:5.

  27. 2.    The head of a family a Priest (for a family) Ex.12:3. (Time of Law)

  29. 3.    One tribe chosen for Holy Service.  From this tribe of Levi 5 men were
  30.       chosen to be priests - Aaron and his 4 sons.  Aaronic Priesthood
  31.       continues until Christ, Ex 28:1, 40-41.

  33. 4.    The High Priest or head priest (for a nation) which began in Aaron
  34.       Lev 21:10 (Time of Grace).

  36. 5.    The Great High Priest (for the church) Jesus.  Heb.4:14.

  38. 6.    Priesthood of the believers. 1 Pet.2:5,9.

  40. ISRAEL TO BE A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS.
  41.  
  42. God planned that all of Israel should be a nation of priests to all other
  43. nations like the tribe of Levi to all other tribes.  Ex 19:6.
  44. Israel failed to obey God Ex 19:5, so God had to make other arrangements.

  46. TRIBE OF LEVI CHOSEN IN PLACE OF ALL ISRAEL.  Num 8:6
  47.  
  48. From this tribe came the Priests.  Here we see the grace of God manifested as
  49. Levi was the least honourable of the 12 tribes, it was under the curse because
  50. of Levi's cruelty.  Gen 49:5-7.
